When you want to buy a new or used motorcycle, the first thing you should know is that both you and the dealer are out to get the better end of the deal. Dealers sell (or try to sell) motorcycles every day, so they usually have a lot more experience at it than you do. But, by reading up on the process here, and getting additional tips and advice, you'll learn how to walk away from the deal with both sides being satisfied.

A good deal is a win-win situation for both parties. Too often though, buyers leave the deal unsatisfied.

In this day and age a motorcycle isn't necessarily a luxury. For some, high prices for reliable cars, maintenance costs and high gas and insurance prices have made motorcycles a necessity. You will likely have to purchase a new one more than once in your life, so you might as well learn to do it in a way that will make buying the bike less painful.

Here are a few tips when shopping around to buy a new or used motorcycle:

1. You should purchase your motorcycle at or around Christmas time because with everybody buying their Christmas presents, not many of them are looking to buy a bike, and dealerships are forced to deal.

Salesmen are struggling to meet their quotas, and more willing to accept price haggling to get the sale.

2. You can also get a good deal from July to October because that is the time of year when dealerships are trying to get rid of their inventory to make way for the new models.

3. Buying a motorcycle online is becoming another great way to get your new ride. Just wait for good rebates and incentives online and shop around.

Print out your information from the best quotes and bring it to the dealer that you are most willing to work with.

Bringing in lower quotes from another company might be your best bet in getting a good deal on the bike you really want.

4. You should visit motorcycle dealers online if you are hoping to find new bike prices, dealer incentives, and the best rebate offers. You might also want to check out the motorcycle auctions and online classifieds too, particularly if you're open to buying used.

5. When you're ready to go into a dealership, bring a copy of your credit score with you. This can lower interest rates on your motorcycle loan. Your dealer shouldn't know more about you than you do.

6. Don’t bring a motorcycle for trade in if you still owe money on it. Dealers rarely pay the rest of the loan on time which will result in you having to pay a great deal of late fees to the bank.

If you do decide to bring a bike that's not fully paid off, get it in writing from the dealership that they will pay the balance within 10 days.

7. Sometimes the dealer might not have a motorcycle available with all of the options and accessories you want, so they'll have to order the bike directly for you. If this happens, they'll usually ask you to pay a $500-$1000 deposit.

Try to pay no more than $500 and do it with a credit card, because sometimes a dealer might claim there's been a price increase on the model or options, and they'll want more money from you. If you've paid with a credit card, you can dispute the amount they try to take.

8. You should never buy if you're in desperate need. A dealer will see that and take advantage.

Also, don't wait until your current bike is too old or unreliable before searching for a new one. Being in a hurry is your enemy and the salesman's best friend. And don't buy the first time you walk into a dealership. The deal might sound terrific, but you need some time without pressure to think about it. Give yourself the time to shop around, compare prices, and get the best deal you can for the bike you really want.
